Softphone protocol association

Set Program Association For Phone Numbers

It is common these days to see telephone numbers hyperlinked on websites, clicking these links will populate the phone number into an associated program on your computer to dial.

Some of the more common applications ("Softphones") are:
  1. 3CX
  2. Microsoft Teams
  3. Skype
  4. Cisco Jabber
  5. Line2
If you have a softphone installed on your computer and clicking the phone number links does not do anything you will probably need to set the correct association in the Windows Control panel.

To do this in Windows 10:
  1. Go to the Start menu and type Settings and open the Settings App
  2. Select the Apps tile
  3. Select Default Apps
  4. At the bottom of the page you will find the following link, click it
  5. Locate the TEL (URL: tel Protocol) and then associate your Softphone application with it.
